Within the framework of the mission’s ongoing efforts to mobilize international humanitarian and development support for Sudan, His Excellency Ambassador Elrayih Hyduob, Ambassador of Sudan to Tokyo, met today, Thursday, June 18, 2026, with Ms. Hideko Hadzialic, Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Representation Office in Tokyo. The meeting was held at the UNDP headquarters and attended by Ms. Chika Kondoh, TICAD Partnership Specialist, along with two of the Programme’s department directors.

At the outset of the meeting, Ambassador Hyduob provided a comprehensive briefing on the current political and security developments in Sudan, highlighting the Sudanese Army’s success in clearing the terrorist militia from most cities. He noted the tangible return to normalcy, the revitalization of production across agricultural and industrial sectors, and the resumption of commercial flights at Khartoum International Airport, which serves as a clear indicator of restored stability in the capital.

The Ambassador extended the gratitude of the Sudanese government and people to the UNDP for its unwavering humanitarian and development efforts, particularly during the conflict. He highly commended the UNDP for being among the leading UN agencies to return and operate directly from its headquarters in Khartoum following the reinstatement of government ministries. He pointed out that the participation of His Excellency the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohi El-Din Salem, in the official reopening ceremony reflects the government’s appreciation and support for the UNDP’s fruitful initiatives in assisting internally displaced persons (IDPs) and its continuous backing of the agricultural sector.

Ambassador Hyduob emphasized to the UNDP Director the importance of advancing further development projects for Sudan with the Government of Japan, given that Tokyo is one of the largest financial contributors to UN agencies. He noted Japan’s keen interest and readiness to support Sudan in vital sectors, including agriculture, electricity, solar energy, and healthcare.

For her part, the UNDP Director expressed her gratitude to the Government of Sudan for its cooperation in facilitating the Programme’s operations on the ground. She reaffirmed the UNDP’s commitment to promoting humanitarian and development projects aimed at improving the livelihoods of war-affected populations in displacement camps, providing means of production for vulnerable families through small-scale industries, mitigating poverty, and preserving the environment.

In the same context, the Director affirmed the UNDP’s readiness to support the Sudanese government’s future efforts toward democratic transition and holding upcoming elections by providing technical and logistical aid, leveraging advanced Japanese expertise and technologies previously utilized in Sudan.

Concluding the meeting, both parties agreed on a joint action plan to propose a package of development and humanitarian projects to be presented to the Government of Japan for funding.
