Tokyo – June 9, 2026

His Excellency Ambassador Elrayih Hyduob met this afternoon, Tuesday, June 9, with Mr. Osamu Kawanishi, the Tokyo-based Head of the African Development Bank (AfDB) External Representation Office for Asia. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Head of Mission, Counselor Ali Mohamed Ahmed Osman, and Mr. Naoshige Kinoshita, Deputy Head of the AfDB Asia Office.

His Excellency the Ambassador expressed his deep appreciation for the Bank’s pioneering role in promoting development across the African continent, as well as the vital projects it undertakes in Sudan. In this context, the Ambassador extended his sincere thanks to the Bank and donor nations, particularly Japan, for their continuous support to Sudan.

During the meeting, Ambassador Hyduob provided a comprehensive briefing on the stabilization of the situation in the country, noting the large-scale return of citizens to their homes following the liberation of most regions of Sudan from the terrorist militia. Furthermore, His Excellency highlighted the importance of implementing smart projects during Sudan’s reconstruction phase, especially in solar energy and micro-projects aimed at poverty alleviation for vulnerable families, such as fruit and vegetable dehydration initiatives. In this regard, he emphasized the necessity of establishing a tripartite partnership involving Sudan, the AfDB, and the Government of Japan. The Ambassador also called on the Bank to develop a comprehensive reconstruction plan for Sudan, drawing on Japan’s pioneering expertise in this field.

For his part, Mr. Osamu expressed his sincere gratitude to His Excellency the Ambassador for his gracious visit and kind words, which reflect the deep appreciation for the Bank’s vital role in advancing development in Africa. He reaffirmed the strong relationship binding the Bank and Sudan, noting that the Bank has resumed its operations in the country and has agreed to finance a package of ambitious agricultural projects.

It is worth noting that the African Development Bank signed an agreement last week with the Government of Sudan to finance agricultural projects in Sennar and Blue Nile states, at a total cost of $87 million.
